Weekly Groceries

I thought it was a good week!
I continue to max out my budget as I'm
continuing to stock up for December
when I take the month off from grocery shopping!

I will shop next week and then that's it until after
Christmas! (Except milk of course!)

This week I spent $21.xx at Meijer for about 45 items!
I didn't realize it was such a good week until I started
pulling and printing coupons.

I also spent $30. at Aldi and
Earlier in the week I spent $4. at CVS
for 4 gallons milk+.

I'm thinking 1 more good week of shopping
should do it... I'm trying to decide if the 30# of
potatoes I have is enough for a month?!?!?!?
I think we go through about 4-5# per week
so we should be good! (I hope!)

So how many #'s of potatoes does your
family go through in a week??

How do you keep potatoes for so long? Ours always seem to go bad after a week!

In a week we can easily eat about 4 or 5 pounds of potatoes but right now we're eating more sweet potatoes since they are at their cheapest!

Hmmm I don't know... I can almost always keep them for a month or usually up to 6 weeks. I try to stock up when the price is decent!

I can't believe yours go bad after only a week??? The only trick I know is to keep them in a cooler/ dark place??

Anyone else feel free to chime in. How long can you keep potatoes. Any tricks???

For our family size we use about 10 pounds of potatoes a week. Some times less if we are in a mood for more pasta and rice.
But we grow our own and store them in the root cellar. This year we harvested about 3000 pounds! :-) We grew whites, reds, purples and ones that are red all the way though. They are sure pretty on the plate!

I don't fix potatoes consistently, but I'd say I can get about three meals out of 5lbs for our family of six.

Last night I fixed four baked and the kids each had a half. For mashed I fix about six since it is my husband's love, but a couple of the kids not so much.

Ideal storage is cool, dark, and low humidity. So not in the refrigerator like I had been doing.

For our family of 7 we go through about 10 lbs of potatoes each week! This week I was able to get 8lb bags for 99¢ so I now have 32lbs of potatoes in my house. They will still all good until I can use them up over the next month by keeping them in a cool, dark place in my basement! Keeping them up in my kitchen where the temps flucuate or where it is warm(above 50°) makes the potatoes go bad faster. Also, it pays to check the potatoes in the bag before you buy them because those with cracks or that are damp will go bad faster as well. Also the other thing to remember about storing potatoes is that they need to be stored away from other fruits and veggies(esp. onions) because they produce gases that will spoil each other. Here is more about storing potatoes. :)

Sorry I deleted my own comment...
Here's what I said!!

Thanks for the link Sonshine. It says properly stored they can last 3-6 months!!!

WOW Kim...3000 lbs of potatoes! I'd love to grow a huge number and have them all year! I'm going to plant at least twice as many as I did this year if I have room!!

we usually buy 5 or 10 lbs at a time at the most....if we don't use them they still seem to last about a month.
Dillon's (Kroger) has a good deal on 10 lbs.
I'm debating on whether to get more than one bag...not sure since I have at least 15 boxes of Betty Crocker potatoes that I got most of them for just .19 a box when they did the mega deal

Our apartment must not be cool and dark! I can't believe they are supposed to last so long! I will try to find a cooler, darker place for them and see how they do!

Thanks!!
